What
is Net Records?
Net Records is an online anti-record label. We
decided that the existing music industry model
was outmoded, and that there had to be an alternative.
Existing sites and communities like MySpace didn't
do what we wanted them to, so we decided to build
our own. Starting with the ability to promote yourself
or your band, and to sell music, we are going to
gradually build a complete portfolio of services
that matches those provided by a record label.
The difference is that we won't ask you to sign
away your rights, or your profits to us. We will
always be transparent about how much we are charging,
and you will always be in control of your music.
How is my music protected if I upload it?
Today we use the Creative Commons music sharing
licence. This licences your music for uploading
and downloading for personal - but not commercial
use. Though fans can legally share your music
freely, they cannot sell it on, and we ask
that they buy it if they like it. We trust
that true fans won't baulk at paying 40p for
a track that they love. At the same time if
they are going to be sharing it with their
friends and promoting you, we aren't going
to get all legal on their ass.
How do you split the money from track sales?
At the moment we have a 50/50 split on track
sales. Setting this site up hasn't been cheap,
and nor is hosting large MP3 files. This isn't
some big US start-up backed by millions of
pounds of investment. This is a business that
three British music lovers have built out of
their own back pockets. So we think it's fair
that for every 40p that comes in, you get half
and we get half. 20p is a lot more than you'd
get if you sold your tracks through iTunes
and a major label.
How do I get paid?
For now we are using PayPal because it is simple
and secure. We figured most of you would have
PayPal accounts from using eBay so that it
is the minimum of hassle for you to get started.
On a regular basis we will transfer the funds
from your track sales back to your PayPal account.
This is a manual process for now, so you might
have to bear with us on occasion. In the long
run we expect to put a more sophisticated system
in place.
Got a question? Mail
us or post on the forums.
If it gets asked a lot we'll add it to this list.
